A two-hour daily commute costs you about 1.7 years over 30 years
A commute feels tolerable one day at a time. Multiply it across a career and the picture changes.
How to calculate commute time over a lifetime
It is a few multiplications.
- Work days per year = 52 weeks × days per week − vacation days − remote days
- Commute hours per year = work days per year × round-trip hours per day
- Career total = commute hours per year × remaining working years
With a five-day week and 15 vacation days you commute on 245 days a year. Multiply that by your round-trip time.
One hour versus two hours
Assume you work from age 30 to 60.
| Daily round trip | Per year | 30-year total | In days | In years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 min | 245 hours | 7,350 hours | 306 days | about 0.84 |
| 120 min | 490 hours | 14,700 hours | 612 days | about 1.68 |
A two-hour round trip means 612 full days, roughly one year and eight months, spent in transit. The calculator assumes a life expectancy of 83, so from age 30 that is 53 remaining years, and the commute is about 3.2% of it. A one-hour round trip is about 1.6%.
Those shares can look small. But they are measured against all remaining time, sleep included. Measured against waking hours only, the share is larger.
What this number leaves out
The calculation treats every commuting minute as lost. It is not. People read, listen to podcasts, or just decompress. And an hour standing on a packed train is not the same as an hour in a seat.
So use the number as a ruler for how much of your life the commute takes up, not as a verdict on waste. It is most useful when you weigh a job or a move: a 30-minute difference each way adds up to most of a year over a career. Applying it to a job decision is covered in A 10% raise that lowers your real hourly wage by 4%.
Frequently asked questions
Does remote work count?
Yes. Enter your remote days per year in the calculator and they are subtracted from your commuting days.
What retirement age should I enter?
The age you actually expect to stop working, not the legal one. Try a few values and compare how much the result moves.
Can commute time be converted into money?
Enter a value per hour and the tool multiplies your total commute hours by it. What an hour is worth differs from person to person, so treat it as a sense of scale.
